BIG 12 TITLE

Why Texas will Win the Big 12?

Looking back at the Texas Longhorns Football Program 4 years ago its hard to imagine that the prestigious program would fall off as quickly as it did.  In the 2009 season the Longhorns played the Alabama Crimson Tide in the National Championship Game and although their starting quarterback Colt McCoy was knocked out the game Texas future looked like it was in good hands with the true freshman quarterback Garrett Gilbert playing with poise and maturity on the biggest stage.  The following season the Longhorns finished with a disappointing record of 5 and 7 and thus did not play in a bowl game for the 1st time in the Mack Brown era.  The next season after Brown made some significant coaching changes to his staff the Longhorns improved to 8 and 5.  In 2012 the Longhorns seemed poised to play in a BCS game but injuries derailed the Longhorns plan and forced a lot of young players into action and although Texas improved they still finished the season with a disappointing record of 9 and 4.  This season those starters that suffered injuries last season return and those youths that started in their place gained very important playing time and will thus be better prepared to play.

After looking at the Texas Longhorns schedule for this fall I am very confident that they will win the Big 12 this year and go on to play in the BCS Championship game.  On offense 4 starters return on the offensive line and starting quarterback David Ash has plenty of game experience under his belt and should vastly improve.  Some the reasons why Ash should be better this season is because he has stable of excellent running backs to hand the ball off to spearheaded by sophomore Jonathan Gray and also his favorite wide receiver targets Mike Davis and Jaxon Shipley are back.  On defense star defensive players Jordan Hicks and Jackson Jeffcoat return from serious injuries and should provide a veteran leadership presence.  The Longhorns defense also is filled with emerging young stars in Malcom Brown, Peter Jinkens and Quandre Diggs.

If the Longhorns can't win the Big 12 this years who knows if they will ever be able to again because the conference is right there for the taking due to the drop off of the Longhorns biggest competition for the conference title.  The Oklahoma Sooners are in a rebuilding mode offensively and lost 3 key players from their offense including LT Lane Johnson, QB Laundry Jones, and WR Kenny Stills.  Kansas State lost their heart and sole on both offense and defense in QB Collin Klein and LB Arthur Brown. West Virginia is also rebuilding on offense after losing QB Geno Smith, WR Stedman Bailey, and WR Tavon Austin.  After assessing Texas schedule anything less than 11 wins this year should be considered a failure by the program.
